Volunteer

Volunteers are a key component in NRAF's efforts to preserve and protect rock art in Nevada. Whether in the field or in the office NRAF's volunteers contribute thousands of hours every year, over 4,200 hours in 2013 alone, equating to over $80,000 in donated labor! NRAF's program accomplishments would not be possible without this amazing level of support. Volunteers can help in many ways, including:

- Assisting archaeologists to record rock art sites in the field

- Processing fieldwork data

- Serving as tour leaders to publicly interpreted rock art sites

- Helping in community outreach programs that spread the historic preservation message

- Selling merchandise and helping with fundraising campaigns

- Data entry, filing, and other administrative tasks at our Reno office

Current Office Volunteer Opportunities

NRAF's Reno office is open from 10 am - 2 pm on Wednesdays to volunteers. At present, we are processing field drawings from recent projects into their final archival digital format by transferring drawings made in the field in to an inked format. This is an extremely important and time-consuming part of the documentation process and is a great way to learn more about Nevada rock art, as well as honing your drawing skills.

Training is available at these regular inking sessions for those new to the process or who would like a refresher. We also need general office assistance, including filing, data entry, and events preparation.

Volunteer Training in Documentation Techniques

Periodicaly NRAF schedules two-day workshops for members who are interested in volunteering in the field. One day in the classroom covers the basics of rock art research, legal and management issues in archaeological heritage management, rock art recordation methods. One day in the field provides practical training in the methods learned in the class.
